At the reception for my wedding I made a speech. I can’t recall every detail of it, I remember is that it was short, I was sweating a lot, and I had no idea who about seventy five percent of the people in the room were. What I do know is that I thanked Kerry’s parents for their support throughout the time that my new wife and I had been together and said that my life would have been a lot more difficult without them. This wasn’t just a desperate attempt to suck up to my future in-laws, it was true and needed saying. Without their generosity, understanding, and kindness those three years would have been a real struggle (I’d have had to pay for the wedding for a start).
Since that time they have only gone up in my estimation. They have proved invaluable in their support of us with our daughter and now with our son, they have gone vastly out of their way to help us out, and they have made me feel a valued part of their family (whether I like it or not). Sure there are some things that irritate me about them: Jeannette’s habit of plucking her nostril hairs and using them to floss her teeth can be a little off putting, especially at mealtimes; and Archie’s insistence on carrying out a full regimental inspection every morning at 5am (5:30am on Sundays) gets a little wearing after a while – but hey, we’re family so I can overlook these things.
Archie and Jeanette are planning on moving up North in the very near future and will be leaving a lot of people in Gloucester with a large Malcolm sized hole in their lives. I thought it might be nice if I set up a blog for them in order that they can keep everyone up to date. They don’t have to use it, I won’t be offended if they don’t. After all, it’s quite hard for most old age pensioners to get to grips with the interweb. But I’m guessing that if Jeanette writes half as much as she talks then there could be a good few hours of reading here every day.
Dan.
